Shonali Munde, a transgender and a Counsellor in Darpan Foundation addressing the media professionals in The Hotel Sahil, Mumbai

The purpose of the regional level meet was to let the media persons know what all problems does this community face on regular basis and how the media should display the community in a positive way. The conference saw the amalgamation of Media persons from Punjab, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and also leaders and representatives from Transgender/Hijra community. In the present scenario, the transgender community is not at all medically and socially strong. They have to go through a lot of socially misconstructed ideas and norms through which the discrimination happens. Also, health wise this community is not given so much of concern and which is why, they are prone to life-taking STD's and AIDS.

Dr. Adarsh Mishra, pointed out a very interesting thought, "When we stop calling the community as Hijras which degrades their meaning, then only we can do something for their cause."

Shonali Munde threw some light on the lifestyle, culture and the dynamics of the transgender community. How they earn, what are their employment opportunities, the life of sex workers, their gurus and their families. The result of the meeting came out to be a positive one as the transgenders let the media personnel know that they are humans too who are fighting for equal rights. They don't mean harm, they just want to gain an equal status in the eyes of the law as well as amongst the society. In the words of Dhananjay, "Whenever you call us for Badhai on certain occasions, then you seek for our blessings, otherwise, you are either afraid of us or cast us out of the society."
