Addicted: Drug and its Rampant Use

Last year, Bollywood industry tried to showcase a reality that is spoken by many but dared to repair by few. 'Uddta Punjab', a movie very near to reality presented the circumstances that not only Punjab but most of the north India is facing right now. However, the movie facing bans for obvious reasons in the state of Punjab, shows only that how poor the authorities rule us are. Where we should feel protected, the high authorities and our so-called protectors of the society are supporting the threat of drug menace.

Drug abuse is a problem nowadays, that is not just inside the four walls of the society, in fact it is now under the limelight throughout India. There was a time when Punjab & Haryana were known for being the most hard working agricultural hubs of India; Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir known for the breath taking sceneries; Chandigarh known for being the most planned city in the whole country; and New Delhi known for being the hub of cultural heritage and in true sense of being the capital of India.

No matter what the tourism of each city claims in its advertisements and political manifestos but the reality of the ground level hugely contradicts with the high-level claims. Punjab is being recognized as a State prone to drugs. However, other north Indian states are also being a victim of the drug menace. You can see drug de-addiction centres in almost all parts of Punjab, but most of the times they are of no use. A person once addicted to any kind of drug, cannot be repelled away from it unless and until he or she do not want that to happen.

Many 16-17 year olds are ruining their lives because of the addiction to drugs. Not only do they waste their money and effort in getting these drugs but also, they are finishing their own lives because of the drug menace. Most of all, many of the lifetaking drugs are easily available at the hands of youngsters.

The question is why not finish off the problem from the root rather than trying to finish the virus once it has spread. And not to mention, the related authorities plus the youth themselves know from where the problem of drug abuse starts. Maybe a day would come when Asha Kumari Jaiswal, mayor of Chandigarh would not have the youth to pledge against drug addiction (like she recently did in an event in Panjab University).

Last but not the least, I would end it in the words of Governor of Chandigarh, V.P. Singh, "Hard working people do not get addicted to drugs", and even if they are, then one and all should come together and end the menace by working properly.
