Dikshant International School brings the solar system closer to their students

Faguni Verma | Chandigarh

Students of Dikshant International School, Zirakpur have again outshined while proving the importance of practicality versus theoretical knowledge. 22 students of Class XI were a part of 7 day workshop on telescope making under the guidance of Tushar Purohit, a telescope expert from the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, IUCAA, Pune. The results from the workshop were astounding with 7 working telescopes being made while Tushar conducted the workshop under his mentorship.

About the experience, Tushar Purohit says, "I always have fun teaching the students the delicacy of creating telescopes. It's a fun way to engage children in the practicalities of what they learn from their physics class. Everyone was enthusiastic about the project and it a learning experience for each and every student."

Tushar Purohit who conducted the workshop has an expertise in telescopes like Newtonion, Galilio, casigrain etc. He has an experience of more than 18 years in Telescope & astronomy. Tushar said, "The students made Newtonian type telescopes. We used household items to create the telescopes. Table top glass was grinded by keeping one over other with carborandom (silicon carbide). The main body of telescope was made using PVC pipes which were painted from inside and outside by students, these were then put up on an Altitude Azimuth mount. A concave mirror was used instead of a lens to make the telescopes."

This kind of experience initiated the atronomer in students who are now aiming to look forward to study astrophysics. They enthusiastically explained the whole mechanism oftheir telescopes that can see upto planet Staurn. Such powerful device can also look into nearby galaxies and is the effort for making students more receptive towards their education.
