MOM & RAPE
Raking in Rs.7.75 crore in just three days since its release, Ravi Udyawar's directorial 'MOM' is making headlines for its music, cast and crew, acting and social message. The film tends to provide not just one but many social messages that it exhibits. Dealing with rape victims, the flaws in the laws, stepmother-daughter relationship and the highlighting of transgenders are one of the few issues the the film tends to throw a light upon. Sridevi, who made a comeback to the industry with such a thriller is a treat for the audience to watch her on screen. Also, equally supported by Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Akshaye Khanna, Adnan Siddiqui and Sajad Ali, this movie brilliantly presented close to reality truths that what really happens in India.
The story revolves around Devki (Sridevi) who is the stepmother of Arya (Sajad Ali) who does not accept her as her mother and there is a tense relationship between the two of them throughout the whole film. After Arya is gangraped and how the family goes through this turmoil is intelligently expressed by the actors. The acting and emotions are such that it overwhelmed the audiences as well as Sridevi's daughter, Jahnavi Kapoor. What is missing in other rape films is covered up by 'MOM', that is, the harassment and the psychological after effects of the victim and the family after the tragedy strikes.

Moreover, if it takes time to seek justice from the law, it totally breaks up the family. Besides, there comes a point where Devki loses hope that she would ever be able to get her daughter back or not. The dialogues are marvellous and just hit right where they are intended to. How the family copes up is the main struggle that is presented with this film.
Furthermore, it makes you wonder that is India really prone to rapes and inefficiency of the legal system to provide justice to the innocents?
It put forwards many more questions like should the common man ultimately take the law in their hands if they are denied justice? Or powerful people would continue to misuse the laws and we would continue to do nothing about it? Seems like Bollywood is making too many flicks to showcase reality and what's wrong with the system indeed. The word 'MOM' is correctly defined in the film that how one teacher struggles to get justice for her stepdaughter in the climax, the emotions are swiped off and the purpose of the movie is solved. Hopefully, people take home a message after watching this wonderful film.
